Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF): The New, Non-Surgical Treatment for Hair Restoration

Hair loss is common. However, there are options available to restore and promote new hair growth. Here’s what you need to know about how platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) works. Keep reading!

If you’ve experienced thinning hair or hair loss, you’re not alone. At least half of women will experience hair loss at some point, according to The Cleveland Clinic. There are a number of factors that contribute to female hair loss, including age.

At Markidan Gynecology and Women’s Health, our team offers platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) for hair restoration at our office in Princeton, New Jersey.

What causes hair loss in women?

A little shedding is normal. On average, most people lose between 50 and 100 strands of hair daily, with new strands growing in to replace them. When normal hair loss isn’t replenished, it leads to thinning, balding, and hairline recession.

Some common causes of female hair loss include:

  • Hormones due to pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause
  • Stress
  • Medical treatments like radiation and chemotherapy
  • Genetics and family history
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Anemia
  • Medication
  • Chemical treatments

If you notice more hair in your brush or the shower than normal, give us a call to schedule a consultation.

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) treatments for hair restoration

PRF is a non-surgical treatment for hair restoration. Using a small sample of your own blood, the platelets and fibrin are collected to create a solution rich in growth factors. The solution is injected into your scalp to stimulate the hair follicles.

A PRF treatment typically takes 30 minutes to an hour. PRF stimulates new hair growth through cell regeneration using your body’s own proteins and growth factors, so most people can expect to see results over a few months, depending on their circumstances.

Once your blood is drawn and the PRF solution is prepared, a numbing agent will be applied to the injection site to keep you comfortable and minimize discomfort.

Since PRF is non-surgical, you don’t have to worry about a healing period or any downtime after the treatment.  You can get right back to your normal activities and routine immediately after.

Every person is different, and multiple factors contribute to hair thinning and loss.

The first step is to schedule an appointment for a consultation. We will evaluate your condition and recommend the best hair loss treatment for your needs.
